Valerie Bai

Violin

Valerie Bai is an eleven-year-old violinist whose musical development reflects an exceptional combination of artistic sensitivity, technical accomplishment, and intellectual curiosity. She currently studies with internationally acclaimed violinist Stefan Jackiw and receives ongoing artistic mentorship from Prof. Robin Wilson. Her musical growth has also been enriched through studies and masterclasses with distinguished violin pedagogues and artists including Prof. Mihaela Martin, Prof. Boris Kuschnir, Prof. Kirill Troussov, Prof. Philip A. Draganov, Prof. So-Ock Kim, Prof. Feng Ning, and violinist Baiba Skride.


Beginning violin studies at the age of four, Valerie quickly distinguished herself through her remarkable focus, musical imagination, and natural affinity for the instrument. She has since earned recognition at numerous national and international competitions, often competing successfully against musicians significantly older than herself. Most recently, she was awarded First Prize in the Under-15 Division of the 2026 Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition in Budapest, Hungary, where she also received the Best Virtuoso Award.


Previous honors include First Prize at the New England Philharmonic Young Artist Competition (2025, USA) and Second Prize at the 22nd International G. Ph. Telemann Violin Competition (2025, Poland), both with no age-based categorization. In 2024, she received First Prize at the Leonid Kogan International Competition (Belgium), First Prize at the International Anton Rubinstein Junior Violin Competition (Germany), Grand Prize at the International Music Competition Nouvelles Étoiles (France), and First Prize at the Mimas Festival International Competition (Italy).


As a soloist, Valerie has appeared on stages with several orchestras. At the age of eight, she made her orchestral debut with The Rivers Symphony Orchestra, performing Haydn's Violin Concerto in C Major after winning the Rivers Concerto Competition in 2023. Later that year, she won the Boston Youth Symphony Repertory Orchestra Concerto Competition and performed Bruch's Violin Concerto in G Minor as soloist with the orchestra. In 2025 and 2026, she performed Mozart's Violin Concertos No. 5 and No. 4 with the Lexington Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Jonathan McPhee and was invited to return as a soloist during the orchestra's 2027 season.


In December 2025, she appeared with the New England Philharmonic as winner of its Young Artist Competition, performing the third movement of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. She also performed the third movement of Brahms' Double Concerto with cellist Sofia Hernandez-Williams and the New Philharmonia Orchestra and Most recently, she appeared as soloist alongside Stefan Jackiw in Bach's Double Concerto with Camerata Strings and performed in the Gala Concert of the 2026 Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition at the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.


Beyond her concerto appearances, Valerie is an active chamber and orchestral musician. She became one of the youngest musicians admitted to the Boston Youth Symphony (BYS), the flagship orchestra of the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras under the direction of Maestro Federico Cortese. She was also among the youngest recipients of an Honorable Mention in the BYS Concerto Competition. Since 2022, Valerie has performed with Camerata Strings under the direction of violinist and conductor Marta Zurad, where she continues to develop her collaborative artistry and leadership as an ensemble musician.


A passionate chamber musician, she is one of the founding members of Trio Nannerl. In 2026, the trio advanced to the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and was among the youngest ensembles to reach this stage of the competition.


Valerie has pursued advanced musical training through leading international academies and masterclasses and was accepted to the prestigious Keshet Eilon Mastercourse 2026. While she studied with Prof. Boris Kuschnir during the Lac Léman Music Masterclasses in Geneva in 2025, she was selected to perform in the Final Gala Concert in the historical concert hall of Conservatoire de musique de Genève. Valerie has also participated in the Swiss International Music Academy in 2024 and 2025 and the Heifetz International Music Institute in 2023, experiences that have broadened her artistic perspective and exposed her to diverse musical traditions, pedagogical approaches, and performance practices.


In addition to performing, Valerie is a dedicated young composer. Since the age of six, she has studied composition with Prof. Alla Cohen. Her original works include Story of Little Lisa, premiered at The Rivers Contemporary Music Seminar; original cadenzas for Mozart violin concertos; and a Sonatina for Violin and Piano, premiered in 2025. She is a two-time Honorable Mention recipient in the MTNA Music Composition Competition, reflecting her continued commitment to creative musical expression and musical craftsmanship.


Valerie currently performs on a 1767 José Contreras violin, generously on loan from Reuning & Son Violins.


Valerie's repertoire spans a broad spectrum of solo, concerto, chamber, and orchestral literature. In recent years, she has developed a particular interest in exploring the stylistic and expressive possibilities of the violin repertoire, ranging from the elegance of the Baroque and Classical eras to the virtuoso traditions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Her studies are guided not only by technical refinement but also by a deep curiosity about the historical, structural, and emotional foundations of the music she performs.


Valerie approaches music-making with equal dedication to technical excellence, thoughtful interpretation, and creative exploration. Through her combined pursuits as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral performer, composer, and scholar of the violin, she continues to cultivate a distinctive artistic voice and demonstrates exceptional promise as one of the most accomplished young violinists of her generation.
