A PEACE-LOVING BULL
This January, Conductor Emerita Gisèle Ben-Dor leads Pro Arte through an adventure of music and storytelling that will thrill your whole family. Sensemayá, by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas, is a spellbinding depiction of an Afro-Caribbean ceremony in which a ritualist must subdue a snake. In Johannes Brahms’s Double Concerto, written to repair a friendship with the violinist Joseph Joachim, our young violin and cello soloists represent Joachim and Brahms themselves as they find their way to reconciliation. Jonathan Bailey Holland’s El Jaleobrings the dramatic painting by John Singer Sargent of a flamenco dancer to life with brisk handclapping and incisive rhythms. In Ferdinand the Bull, the story of a bull who stays true to his peaceable self is accompanied at every turn by the unforgettable music of Georges Bizet’s Carmen.
