As Principal Viola of Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, Anne Black has been featured several times as soloist. Founding Music Director Larry Hill led her performance of Hindemith’s Konzertmusik for Viola and Chamber Orchestra. During Gisèle Ben-Dor’s tenure, she performed the premiere performance and recording of Concert Piece for Viola and Chamber Orchestra by Ezra Sims, as well as Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with former Concertmaster Kristina Nilsson. She is also violist of the newly formed Conifer Quartet, with fellow members of the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra. The quartet was just featured live on March 7 at GBH’s Boston Public Library Studio.
Ms. Black’s wealth of experience as an orchestral violist includes years of concerts and tours across the US and Asia with the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops. She frequently joins many other local groups, including Boston Ballet, Boston Opera, Bach, Beethoven and Brahms Society, Emmanuel Music, and Boston Baroque. She is Principal Viola of Cantata Singers, and a frequent guest Principal of the Lexington Symphony. Ms. Black is a tenured violist of Handel + Haydn Society's period instrument orchestra and performs frequently with the Aston Magna Music Festival. She was featured on Mozart's own Viola, during its first trip to the US, for a live performance and recording with violinist Daniel Stepner at WGBH in June 2013.
A champion of contemporary music, Ms. Black is violist of Dinosaur Annex Music Ensemble and has performed frequently with Collage New Music, including Collage’s Grammy-nominated recording of John Harbison’s Mottetti di Montale. She currently performs on a viola made for her by Wendela and Peter Moes in 2008.
