TEA AND TRUMPETS
In June, join Pro Arte and conductor Conner Gray Covington for an afternoon of sheer musical exuberance. The ballet music from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera Idomeneo is not for the faint of heart. Composed for the virtuoso court orchestra in Munich, this showpiece is full of drama, flourish, and special effects. Elena Langer’s The Day the Sun Came Round for Tea, commissioned jointly by Pro Arte and trumpeter Benjamin Wright, receives its world premiere. Inspired by an absurdist poem in which a writer befriends the sun, Langer wrote her concerto “to show off the timbre of the trumpet in all its beauty.” As a composer, pianist, teacher, and scholar, Louise Farrenc was a musical pioneer in 19th-century France. Brimming with ideas and textures, her kaleidoscopic second symphony will provide a sparkling finale to Pro Arte’s 49th season.
