Don’t miss your chance to hear Pro Arte’s superb winds and brass in a fascinating program spanning four centuries. Our 49th season kicks off with a burst of musical fireworks for two trumpets — Igor Stravinsky’s Fanfare for a New Theatre. The Venetian Renaissance composer Giovanni Gabrieli wrote his brass canzons for St. Mark’s Basilica, where players in opposing choir lofts would exchange musical phrases in majestic dialogue. Although 18th-century serenades were form of light outdoor entertainment, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart imbued his Serenade in C minor with unusual seriousness and intensity.  Stravinsky consciously recalls Classical forms in his Octet of 1923, a colorful work that is full of surprises. Our first concert concludes with George Enescu’s 1906 Dixtuor for ten winds, which likewise looks back at the Classical serenade through a dreamy lens.
