Statement from the Board Chair
I have been involved in some capacity with Pro Arte for 25 years, progressing from audience member and volunteer to board member and now Board Chair. I am not alone. Since its beginning over 30 years ago, Pro Arte has maintained a longtime, loyal following. A number of factors contribute to this sense of being in the Pro Arte "family": outstanding musicians and performances, the orchestra's cooperative structure, adventurous repertoire, and small size, and the intimate venue of Sanders Theatre. There are welcoming, familiar faces in the audience and on the stage. Further, it is a source of pride that Pro Arte has been committed to its community, including underserved populations, since its inception.
At present, we have a small, but active Board. As part of the Cooperative, the Board has multiple tasks and responsibilities. These include office work, fundraising, event planning, long-term planning, board development, and subcommittee membership (e.g., Executive, By-Laws, Artistic/ Repertoire). Both Board and musician members are represented on all committees. Board members are proud audience members and ambassadors for the orchestra, and we are facing the current funding challenges in the arts with a creative spirit and an upbeat attitude. We are particularly excited and energized this season as we greet our new, dynamic Music Director, Kevin Rhodes, recently chosen by the members of the Cooperative.
