In March, we bring to life Stravinsky’s epic work L’Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier’s Tale). Adapted from a Russian folktale, the story tells of a young soldier in WWI who gives his violin to the devil in exchange for a book that predicts the economy of the future. The rakish tale is full of the composer’s wit and humor, showcasing Stravinsky’s eclectic combination of jazz elements, marches, and Russian folk music.  The piece will be narrated by Henry Fogel; the roles of the Solider and Devil will be read by Jeremiah Kissel and Will Lebow, respectively.  We complete the program with a reading of Schubert’s intense and dramatic work, Death and the Maiden, arranged by Gustav Mahler for string orchestra from the original quartet.  Kevin Rhodes returns to conduct these entrancing musical stories.
