Felix Chen is a senior at Shrewsbury High School in Shrewsbury. He began taking piano lessons with Bela Miller in Rhode Island when he was five, and has continued studying with Faina Kofman after moving to Massachusetts in 2006. At the age of 12, Felix received first prize in the Worcester Youth Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, and performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the orchestra that year. He also received prizes in the Senior Division of the University of Rhode Island’s Piano Extravaganza in 2010 and 2011.
In Nov. 2010, he won first place in the NEC preparatory school Group B (age 12 – 15) concerto competition, which earned him a solo performance with the NEC Youth Orchestra on Nov. 14th, 2011 at Jordan Hall.
In addition to piano, Felix has also been studying clarinet with Vladimir Vaskevich at the Joy Of Music Program since 2007. Felix enjoys playing clarinet in the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra (BYSO). He has also been in the Massachusetts All-State Festivals in 2009 and 2010. He has won Music Worcester Young Artist’s Competition Sylvia Gafvert Stubblebine Scholarship twice in 2011 and 2012 with the clarinet. He was also inducted into the TRI-M Music Honor Society in 2011.
Felix is a member of the high school math, quiz, and tennis teams. In his free time, he enjoys playing basketball.
