Competition Rules and Guidelines

The Fifth Annual Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition is open to all instrumentalists 18 years of age or younger as of March 2, 2013.

Applicants must submit a CD for pre-screening purposes along with a completed application form and two letters of recommendation. The pre-screening repertoire does not have to be the same as the competition repertoire and should be no more than 12 minutes in length.

The application fee is $35 and is due with the application. Pro Arte will consider a fee waiver for those who can demonstrate financial need. Waivers are determined on a case by case basis. Please contact the Pro Arte office at (617) 779-0900 or if you would like to request a fee waiver.

The repertoire chosen for the competition must be suitable for performance with a chamber orchestra. Baroque, Classical and many new works lend themselves especially well to chamber orchestra performance. Selections should be one movement of a concerto or a self-contained piece of similar length. A list of suggested repertoire can be found here.

Submitting an application does not guarantee a place in the live audition round of the competition. Contestants chosen for the live audition will be notified by the end of October. Competition winners will be announced after the live audition on November 17.

Contestants are responsible for arranging their own accompanists if chosen for the live round.

All decisions of the jury are final. Winners will perform their selection with the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra on March 2, 2013 in the Winner’s Concert open to the public.
